26 weeks and camping!

We went camping this past weekend because we thought it may be one of the last time that we can do that for a bit.  Apparently this week (many people's spring break) is a popular weekend and we were slow on the draw, leaving us with a campsite at Cooper's Lake State Park.  Turned out to be an alright little park, although there wasn't a ton to do.

We did, however, get to use the good 'ol dutch oven again, which is always fun.  We made pork chops with onions, mushrooms and cream sauce over egg noodles (think basically beef stroganoff).

We also were able to try out the new fishing pole I got for Christmas.  It is a fun pole because it collapses real nice, making it easier to take places.  The fishing was actually pretty terrible and I lost a lure, too.

Fun tip: How can you tell which person fishing is from Colorado and which is from Texas?  Who is wearing North Face and who is wearing camo.  I was literally the only one (and Sara) not wearing camo.

We figured the 26 week picture should be in front of the tent.  Our camping neighbors were impressed with our camping ability (because it stormed pretty good and they were in campers), but they were even more impressed when they saw Sara was pregnant (not making that up either... they told us).

Starship Pegasus

There are a few must see sights on the drive between Dallas and Waco. I finally stopped today to take a picture of one of them. This is what appears to be an old restaurant or something like that. Driving by i always thought it had windows and everything, but that is not the case. This thing is actually just a fancy solid cement done with windows painted on it.

Stay classy, Italy, TX.

Shrink to fit part 2

So a while back I wrote a blog about a pair of Levi 501 raw jeans i bought.  It has now been a while since I got the jeans and thought I would post an update.  They are by far the best fitting jeans I have ever owned and they are really starting to have a pretty unique character to them.  They are getting faded according to what I do with them and all of that, which is fun.  Fun to have clothes that tell a bit of a story about my life.  Anyway, not to get all warm and fuzzy about my pants, here are some pictures.

I think I have washed them four times now - more than most people with jeans like this may do.  I still have to say that I am always just amazed that they don't really look dirty and they don't smell at all.  Sometimes I think they start to look like they have a slight tint to them and that is when I would wash them and it is funny because when I do they still bleed a little bit of color.

Just recently you can start to see where my cell phone usually is in the right pocket.  Front view:

They have cool crinkle lines behind the knees, too.  Back view:

21 weeks!

We had another baby appointment today and it was the day that they do the anatomy check and find out if 'Franklin' is actually a boy or a girl.  The anatomy all looked really great, which was reassuring to the MD in this family unit.  The guy doing it was super good at doing ultra-sounds so it went surprisingly quick, too.  Although, since we are going to a solo practice OB, she had us go to another practice that is technically a high risk one, but they do ultrasounds all the time and must be her preferred sounders.

Anyways, more to the point, below is a nice little profile picture of the little guy.  'Franklin' actually is a Franklin (as in gender... probably not name).

19.5-ish

Today we took a nice little stroll around White Rock lake in like upper 60 degree weather and thought we should take another picture of 'Franklin'.  It is funny going down to Waco each week because I can literally see the baby get bigger each time I get back.

Things are still going well.  About the only thing Sara craves is hamburgers, which is awesome.

18-ish

We have been meaning to take another picture of Sara for a while.  We did the other night when she was all tuckered out from work and what not.  I was super tempted to post the photo, but she was not happy, not smiling and I think the ramifications of sharing it would be painful.  So I withheld.  But here is one that is good!

She came home yesterday and said strangers were asking her when she is due.  She is still probably on the cusp of when that would be a gamble and when it may not be... but really, is it ever ok to ask a stranger that?  So we take this and Sara looks at it and goes, 'am I really that big?!'

running (as in jogging)

Last year for Christmas, Sara got me a GPS running watch and the heart rate monitor.  I am a big fan of data, so the fact that I could track, map and graph my runs and what not made me actually go running a lot more.  Well, more like jogging more... not so much running when compared to people who actually are runners.

Anyways, kind of fun data from last year... I went running just over 150 times (that I also had the watch for). Covered just shy of 390 miles for close to 57.5 hours.  Garmin estimates that this is just over 45,000 calories.  To me, that last part seems like it should be higher, haha.  All that pain, sweat and tears and it totals up to only like 15 days worth of eating.  dang.

Despair re-defined

This past week at out Bible study we were talking about New Year's resolutions, so I have been thinking about that this past week.  Last night I was thinking about how it is interesting that we tend to phrase our resolutions in negatives - lose weight - or in thinly veiled positives - be more productive (stop being lazy), be more organized (stop being sloppy), eat healthy (stop eating junk).  What would it mean, instead, to think of resolutions that were indeed positive ones.  'Productive' ones.

We talked about the verse in Ephesians (2:10) that says, "we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."  In this sense, having a productive resolution then relates back to our identity in Christ.  For the longest time I thought identity issues were interesting but at the end of the day had nearly no meaning for me.  I always thought, 'yes, I agree that my identity is in Christ,' but this carried no real impact, no real change it seemed.  It was a statement that sounded Christian, warm and fuzzy.

Then I came across a statement in Kierkegaard once about despair.  He thought that one is thrown into despair when they come to the realization that they cannot be better, cannot change, or cannot fix something.  We all have habits we get into, things we do, talk about, think about or whatever that is not in line with who we 'are' or want to be.  This is the whole point of the resolution almost.  But Kierkegaard had it right, I think.  We must see, at some point, that those failings are endemic to who we are, and this realization shifts how we see ourself not only now, but also who we see our self becoming and even re-defines who we thought we were in the past.  It changes all.  Even that statement is hard to grasp without having had the realization; having had the veneer over despair ripped off.  That is despair, and it cannot be shaken off.  It can, however, be taken from us.  This is what it means to have our identity in Christ.  He takes the identity of despair from us and gives us his own identity of being right before God.  It is only in this way that, for me, 'identity in Christ' is not only a fuzzy little Christian saying, but a reality that changes all.  Who I am, who I can be, and who I have been.

So, the resolution.  It is, can be or should be positive because it is first rooted in an identity that allows one to be productive in life.  To do what God intends for our life.  This is only possible because we are able to really be that person created by God and not someone who tries, fails and gives up, or forgets and deviates.  Yes we do forget and we do fail, but we do not despair and be overcome by lassitude.  This is why forgiveness is not once and done, it is frequent and redefining.

Peeps during the Reformation talked about vocation in a new way.  Before them, it was seen as a cloistered life and they changed it to be a life of meaning.  The work we do matters and does something real of worth in the world.  They talked about how we are God's mask in the world doing his work.  That is how the work we do can take on a much deeper meaning and be 'productive'.

So, the question remains then.  What positive resolution, direction or path is there for us this year and in life?  Probably a good thing to think about and struggle with.  I actually think the struggle is central to the staying 'on path.'  Maybe we should be like the old Rabbi Akiva, who wanted to pay a soldier to stand outside his door and ask him every time he passed, "Who are you, and why are you here?"

flu trends 2012

Seem like everyone around you is getting sick and that there is a lot of flu around this year? Well, you are probably correct. Just pulled the pic below from Google's Flu Trends, and as you can see, this year is not only substantially worse than other years but it is earlier in the year too (apart from the good 'ol swine flu year!). Sadly, it does not appear to be on the down slope just yet, either. As you can see, almost the whole country is currently classified as 'intense'. Good times! I joined the party this year as did most of my family it seems!
